The struggle to perform well is universal, but nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine. In his new audiobook, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable. His vivid stories take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, to a polio outbreak in India and to malpractice courtrooms around the country. He discusses the ethical dilemmas of doctors´ participation in lethal injections, examines the influence of money on modern medicine and recounts the astoundingly contentious history of handwashing. Finally, he gives a brutally honest insight into life as a practising surgeon. Unflinching but compassionate, Gawande´s investigation into medical professionals and their progression from good to great provides a detailed blueprint for success that can be used by everyone. 1. In an increasingly urbanized world, urban terrain has become a greater factor in military operations. Simultaneously, advances in military technology have given military forces sharply increased capabilities. The conflict comes from how urban terrain can negate or degrade many of those increased capabilities. What happens when advanced weapons are used in a close-range urban fight with an abundance of cover? Storming the City explores these issues by analyzing the performance of the US Army and US Marine Corps in urban combat in four major urban battles of the mid-20th century (Aachen 1944, Manila 1945, Seoul 1950, and Hue 1968). Alec Wahlman assesses each battle using a similar framework of capability categories, and separate chapters address urban warfare in American military thought. In the four battles, across a wide range of conditions, American forces were ultimately successful in capturing each city because of two factors: transferable competence and battlefield adaptation. The preparations US forces made for warfare writ large proved generally applicable to urban warfare. Battlefield adaptation, a strong suit of American forces, filled in where those overall preparations for combat needed fine tuning. From World War II to Vietnam, however, there was a gradual reduction in tactical performance in the four battles. The book is published by University of North Texas Press. 1. Language: English. Panzer Gunner is a unique memoir of a Canadian serving in a German armored division. Bruno Friesen explains what it was like to fight in a tank on the Eastern Front and provides details on the battlefield performance of the Panzer IV tank. Six months before World War II erupted in 1939, Bruno Friesen was sent to Germany by his father in hopes of a better life. Friesen was drafted into the Wehrmacht three years later and ended up in the 7th Panzer Division. Serving as a gunner in a Panzer IV tank and then a Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer, Friesen experienced intense combat against the Soviets in Romania, Lithuania, and West Prussia. 1. Language: English. In this updated edition of the blockbuster best-selling leadership book that took America and the world by storm, two US Navy SEAL officers who led the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War demonstrate how to apply powerful leadership principles from the battlefield to business and life. Combat, the most intense and dynamic environment imaginable, teaches the toughest leadership lessons, with absolutely everything at stake. Jocko Willink and Leif Babin learned this reality first-hand on the most violent and dangerous battlefield in Iraq. As leaders of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, their mission was one many thought impossible: help US forces secure Ramadi, a violent, insurgent-held city deemed ´´all but lost.” In gripping, firsthand accounts of heroism, tragic loss, and hard-won victories, they learned that leadership - at every level - is the most important factor in whether a team succeeds or fails. Willink and Babin returned home from deployment and instituted SEAL leadership training to pass on their harsh lessons learned in combat to help forge the next generation of SEAL leaders. After leaving the SEAL Teams, they launched a company, Echelon Front, to teach those same leadership principles to leaders in businesses, companies, and organizations across the civilian sector. Since that time, they have trained countless leaders and worked with hundreds of companies in virtually every industry across the US and internationally, teaching them how to develop their own high-performance teams and most effectively lead those teams to dominate their battlefields. Since its release in October 2015, Extreme Ownership has revolutionized leadership development and set a new standard for literature on the subject. Required reading for many of the most successful organizations, it has become an integral part of the official leadership training programs for scores of business teams, military units, and f 1. Ask any two people what strategy is and you´re likely to get two different answers. Ask those same two people how strategic thinking generates value at all levels from within an organization and you´ll probably be met with blank stares. Ever since strategy gained currency as an organizational concept in the 1960s, there´s been confusion about how to define it. Strategy isn´t a detailed plan of action. Nor is it a corporate vision or an objective or a mission statement. Strategy is not what to think. It´s how to think. Most books on strategy focus on external strategy: competition with rivals in business or overcoming the enemy on the battlefield. This book is different. The authors take strategic thinking and give it a new focus of attention inside your organization. Inside Strategy is aimed at aligned continual performance improvement. Inside Strategy gives you - and everyone in your organization - a method of managing an unknown future to create new value for your internal and external customers every day. 1. Language: English. Closing the sale. Asking for a raise. Nailing the big presentation. Of the 2,000 hours you work every year, your success or failure is determined in the couple of dozen crucial hours when you need to bring your absolute best. Will you? The last few minutes before a major challenge can be terrifying. Ever wished you knew how to make sure you ace the make-or-break test, audition, or interview? We often feel the most powerless just before we´re expected to act powerful. As you´ll learn in this life-changing book, practice might make perfect, but perfection is useless if you can´t summon it when it counts. Pulling off a great speech or the pivotal at bat also requires the right kind of mental preparation. In Psyched Up, journalist Daniel McGinn dives into the latest psychological research and interviews athletes, soldiers, entertainers, and others who, despite years of practice and enviable track records, will ultimately be judged on their ability to deliver a solid performance when it´s their turn to shine. For instance, he reveals: How Jerry Seinfeld´s jacket and Stephen Colbert´s pen help them get laughs What General Stanley McChrystal said to Special Forces before they entered the battlefield Why the New England Patriots hired the DJ from the Red Sox to help them win Among other counterintuitive insights, McGinn reveals why trying to calm your backstage jitters can be worse for your performance than channeling it into excitement, how meaningless rituals can do more to prepare you in the final moments than last-minute rehearsal, and how a prescription from your doctor could help you unleash your best skills. Whether you´re a sportsperson or a salesperson, an actor or an entrepreneur, one bad hour can throw away months of hard work. There´s so much conflicting popular advice that we often end up doing the wrong things. McGinn separates the facts from t 1. Language: English. Narrator: Johnathan McClain.
